Antoine, Indonesia Sourcing and Quality Manager

My duties:

  • Visit suppliers and ensure compliance with Maisons du Monde quality standards
  • Manage and supervise local logistics

My qualities :

  • Interpersonal skills
  • Organizational skills and attention to detail

How did you discover Maisons du Monde?
After high school at age 18 I left France to live in Indonesia. I had the opportunity to work in a furniture factory there. In three years, I went through all the stages: manufacturing, painting, new products and of course quality. And then I decided to return to France and wondered how to make the most of this experience. As it turns out, I decided I wanted to go back to Indonesia right away. I already knew Maisons du Monde because they are a well-known operator in Southeast Asia. I sent them an unsolicited application, without much hope really, since I don't have an advanced degree, I figured it was a longshot. And then I was pleasantly surprised to receive a call from them: they were interested and there was a vacancy for someone to monitor the suppliers in Indonesia. Three months later, I was back in Indonesia.

What do you like most about your current job?
First of all the human relationship I have day to day with the locals, that is to say the manufacturers. The locations and situations are very diverse. I travel a lot throughout Indonesia but also in Vietnam and throughout all of Southeast Asia. And I love the product, the furniture, I've been working in this field since I was young.

What are the qualities needed to be an Indonesia Sourcing and Quality Manager?
I would say people skills, are really important. You're in contact with suppliers and we want them to give us the best product but also we help find solutions when urgent situations arise.

It's important to be open and constructive. We are clearly the ambassadors of Maisons du Monde abroad. Another thing: you need to be organized to manage all the logistics of visits and inspections in countries where it's not always easy to travel. People imagine that our suppliers are located on white sandy beaches, but that's not true at all...

Can you describe a typical day?
It's often very difficult to define our schedule in advance. Everything depends on what urgent situations arise, but of course there are business trips we try to schedule in advance. As you can tell, I spend more than 80% of my time traveling.

Do you have a story to tell that reflects the spirit and values of Maisons du Monde?
Rather than a story, I would relate my own experience:

For me the Maisons du Monde spirit is their ability to trust people, to give them a chance without necessarily checking to see if they have the right education or background.

In any case, that's what happened for me and I think it's a good quality.
